Demand LVCVA Support Working Families

August 1, 2020 | Call to Action

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is an actual government agency in command of a large taxpayer-funded budget ($900 million in 2019). The Board of Directors is comprised of 8 public officials (mayors, city councilpersons, county commissioners), and 6 private sector representatives (hotel and casino executives, chamber of commerce, etc). This unique composition of public and private power makes the LVCVA a prime target for a set of demands concerned with labor and education justice as the two largest workforces in Nevada are gaming & hospitality, and education labor.

During a recent LVCVA Board of Director’s Meeting on July 15th, we had a call to action that resulted in over 50 public comment submissions urging the LVCVA to support working families. We will continue calling on them to assist stakeholders in the current crisis facing Clark County workers by immediately partnering with the school district, gaming, hospitality, and others to ensure the workforce is supported and its children safely and equitably educated.

This is part of an ongoing local project and a larger national campaign to Demand Safe Schools with teachers unions in Chicago, Boston, and LA to demand that schools stay shit so as to not put our teachers at risk. In order to do that, we must step up as a community to make sure this is possible without creating further risks and burdens soon our workforce. If you would like to learn more about these efforts or how to become involved further, you can contact us at lvdsalabor@gmail.com.
