What Is Socialism?
In order to create a fair and just world, we need to understand how that comes about. In this introductory-level course, we will be discussing excerpts that briefly explain capitalism, why it cannot be reformed, and how it must be replaced with socialism. We encourage all working-class people to join us in learning together so we can build a better future.
You are encouraged to be familiar with the readings before attending. The readings are below, with video or podcast summaries from DSA’s National Political Education Committee where available:
- Excerpt from Understanding Capitalism by Vivek Chibber – NPEC Podcast Episode
- But at Least Capitalism is Free and Democratic, Right? by Erik Olin Wright – NPEC podcast episode
- Democratic Socialism, Explained by a Democratic Socialist by Meagan Day
- Building Socialism from Below: Popular Power and the State by Ben Tarnoff – NPEC Youtube interview with Ben Tarnof
Although this piece will not be discussed at the event, you may also find it helpful for understanding perspectives on socialism:
- Socialism for Realists by Sam Gindin – NPEC summary
