Meeting Minutes

The regular monthly meeting of the Las Vegas chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America was held on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 6:30 PM at the SEIU union hall.

The Minutes for the previous chapter meeting and Agenda for the current meeting were approved without correction or amendment.

The chair gave a report introducing the new board and the plan for more public steering committee meetings.

The vice chair, education chair, treasurer, secretary, and communications chair all gave their respective introductory reports. The treasurer also reported a current chapter balance of $946.97.

A motion to approve the bylaw amendments previously introduced to the chapter during the February 21, 2019 general meeting and sent to the membership via email was put forward after discussion by Allie, seconded, and passed unopposed. Two consecutive approvals must take place for the changes to be enacted.

The chapter held a 30 minute debate regarding the chapter’s possible endorsement of a democratic presidential candidate for the 2020 election anchored by speeches from James, Joe, and Jake.

The motion that the chapter endorse a presidential candidate at all was put forth by Tamara and passed with 12 for, 2 against.

The motion that the chapter endorse Mike Gravel for the 2020 presidential election put forth by Tamara failed with 3 for, 11 against.

The motion that the chapter endorse Elizabeth Warren for the 2020 presidential election put forth by Allie failed with 2 for, 8 against.

The motion that the chapter endorse Bernie Sanders for the 2020 presidential election put forth by Shaun passed with 12 for, 1 against.

The education chair outlined his plan for both a 10 minute education segment during regular chapter meetings as well as an ongoing once per month Socialist Night School, the first meeting of which was announced to be on Saturday, the 6th of July at 6:30 PM at the Happy Earth Market.

In lieu of full subcommittee breakouts brief reports were given by James on Medicare 4 All and Dylan for Labor relating recent goings on in both areas.

Brief informational guest reports were given by Keenan on the pending teachers’ strike and Judith on the NVDEM State Central Committee.
