Socialist Night School: Socialism & Fascism
Fascism, a concept that, until recently, has been on the periphery, has exploded into the mainstream with the rise of Donald Trump and right-wing movements globally. Yet, with this rise, the label “fascism” is often used sloppily, sometimes just naming right-wing movements or movements that support dictatorship and totalitarianism. While being right wing is necessary to being fascist, fascism is a unique movement, one that we as socialists—as fascism’s natural enemies and its only proper cure—should understand.
In this night school, we lay out some unique features of fascism and explore the relationship between fascism, capitalism, and socialism. Then, we discuss the debate involving whether Donald Trump and his supporters constitute a fascist movement.
