Las Vegas DSA strongly condemns the fascist action at the Capitol in Washington DC

The Las Vegas chapter of Democratic Socialists of America strongly condemns the continued persistence of the system of white supremacy that in itself enables the type of fascist action we saw yesterday at the Capitol in Washington DC. As socialists, we will always defend democracy — in the workplace, in the streets, and at the ballot box — against the ruling class and the authoritarian Right.

The country watched as far-right white supremacists, emboldened by Capitol police, attempted to undermine the process of democracy today, after weeks of conservative members of Congress who, alongside the authoritarian in the White House, incited and encouraged this violent attempted coup.

We join Congresswoman and DSA-member Cori Bush in calling for the expulsion of the Republicans who are responsible for this violence. We call on the Nevada congressional delegation, and all members of Congress, to support Rep. Bush’s resolution calling for the expulsion of these members of Congress guilty of inciting the fascist extremists who stormed the Capitol.

This summer, protesters for racial justice both across the country and locally in Las Vegas were teargassed, kettled, and disappeared into unmarked vehicles. Local law enforcement arrested street medics and Legal Observers for the National Lawyers Guild on the Strip; local police murdered Jorge Gomez while he protested for racial justice. In contrast, yesterday, we saw mobs of unmasked, right-wing thugs treated with respect and gentleness by police in the nation’s capital.

The mainstream, corporate media continued to frame these right-wing militants as “pro-Trump protestors” yesterday, though they referred to the left as “thugs” and “rioters” throughout the uprising for racial justice. In addition, we object to the media’s inaccurate usage of the term “anarchist” in describing the militants. We recognize the interests of capitalism as consistent with the interests of fascism – this choice of wording negates the historically anti-capitalist history and nature of anarchist ideologies. While these Trump-supporting insurrectionists are thoroughly fascistic, aligned with capital in their political vision, the anarchists within DSA and organizers we align and work with are, by definition, the opposite.

Even as we move beyond President Trump’s administration, we will continue to see the rise of far-right authoritarianism in this country. Neoliberals believe that Trump is an aberration and consider the change of administrations to be a cure; however, we understand Trump as a symptom of the disease. Trump represents America, so we must change America.  The only way to defeat fascism is through socialism.

We must work together to continue building a multi-racial mass movement of working class people, united in our opposition to the modern incarnations of fascism at home and abroad.  We encourage all who are concerned by yesterday’s actions to join us in our fight for a better world.
